A running commute has two jobs: get you to the destination and leave you ready for what follows. Route access, carrying requirements, clothing changes and a backup journey matter as much as the distance. Trial the plan when you are not under pressure to arrive at a meeting.

Work backwards from arrival

Check where you can change, whether showers or lockers are available and what you can leave at the destination. Packing work shoes, a laptop, lunch and wet running kit creates a different carrying problem from a short run with only keys and a phone.

List the items that must travel on the day and those you can move in advance. Check workplace rules before leaving equipment or personal belongings. Give yourself time to cool down, change and deal with a delayed journey rather than estimating arrival from running pace alone.

Test the route at the relevant time

Preview crossings, lighting, surface and access when you expect to travel. A route that works on a quiet Sunday may be different during a weekday rush. Check the local rules for pedestrians and shared paths; in Great Britain, consult the Highway Code's pedestrian guidance.

Identify a shorter option and a way to switch to another form of transport. Carry whatever you need for the backup journey. A route file can help with navigation but does not confirm that gates, towpaths or facilities are open.

Fit the bag around the actual load

Pack the items you really need and check movement on a short trial. Adjust the straps according to the maker's instructions. Look for rubbing, restricted movement and items shifting inside. A quoted capacity in litres does not tell you whether your laptop fits or whether that load feels manageable while running.

Protect electronics according to their requirements and the bag's documented weather protection. Do not assume a water-resistant fabric makes every pocket waterproof. Read the clothing and carry checklist for further fit checks.

Keep the plan flexible

Reassess the commute when the weather, workload or carrying requirements change. Walking part of the route or taking transport can be the practical choice. If colleagues are joining, create a clear meeting brief with the free session planner, and share only the details the group needs.
