Recovery after a long run starts with how you feel, the demands of the session and the plan for the following days. A massage gun, compression sock or pneumatic boot is an optional product, not proof that you are ready for the next hard workout.

Make room for the basics

Arrange food, fluids, dry clothing and time to rest before leaving for a long outing. London Marathon Events' medical advice discusses post-event recovery, hydration and nutrition, as well as the importance of responding to health concerns. Follow any individual advice you have been given.

Do not turn a 20-mile training run into a fixed countdown to being recovered. Note unusual symptoms, sleep and the effect on ordinary movement. Pain that concerns you deserves assessment rather than more aggressive treatment with a device. See running pain and equipment.

What to ask about a recovery product

Identify the claimed benefit. Comfort, a temporary change in how a muscle feels, reduced soreness and improved future performance are different outcomes. Ask whether the evidence relates to the exact device and use, rather than accepting a testimonial as proof of all of them.

Read the manufacturer's warnings and contraindications before use. If you have a medical condition, an injury, altered sensation or another concern, ask an appropriate clinician whether the product is suitable. Do not use pressure or percussion to suppress symptoms so that you can keep running.

Compare the whole purchase

For boots, check sizing, available pressure settings, cleaning, storage and return conditions. For a massage device, check the control range, attachments and whether it is comfortable to hold. Compression garments should fit according to the manufacturer's instructions; tighter is not automatically better.

Compare the total price, warranty and any consumables. This guide does not rank untested devices, promise an improvement or repeat old discount prices. If the product does not solve a clear problem within an appropriate recovery plan, there may be no purchase to make.

Use the training log constructively

Record the session and your response so the next decision is based on more than an app readiness score. Discuss repeated recovery problems with a qualified coach or health professional. A social running app can organise the next meeting; it cannot certify recovery.
