Understand running heart-rate readings and their limits

A heart-rate reading tells you how frequently the heart is beating at that moment. It does not, on its own, tell you how fit you are, whether a session is appropriate or why you feel unwell.

A heart-rate reading tells you how frequently the heart is beating at that moment. It does not, on its own, tell you how fit you are, whether a session is appropriate or why you feel unwell. Interpret the number alongside the circumstances and the device that produced it.

Separate resting and exercise readings

A reading taken while sitting quietly is different from one taken on a hill. Note whether the value is a live measurement, a daily minimum or an average over the whole activity. Compare like with like before describing a change as a trend.

The British Heart Foundation's heart-rate guide explains that heart rate varies with activity, health and other factors, including some medicines. Its guidance also describes when to seek medical advice. There is no single watch number that provides an individual diagnosis or exercise clearance.

Check what the device is showing

A watch and a chest strap can obtain readings differently. Confirm which sensor supplied the activity and whether the app imported another recording. Check the manufacturer's fit, connection and cleaning instructions. If a number appears implausible, pause to assess how you feel and the recording setup rather than chasing a target on screen.

A chart without missing points is not proof that every measurement was accurate. Likewise, an average can conceal changes during the run. Keep the original recording if you are investigating a discrepancy between two apps.

Treat zones as configured ranges

Different apps can use different zone methods and settings. Before comparing time in zones, check that both apps use the same boundaries and units. An estimated maximum heart rate is an estimate; a formula cannot account for every individual's circumstances.

For a prescribed exercise programme or a relevant medical condition, ask the professional managing your care how to interpret targets. Seek appropriate help for concerning symptoms instead of trying to solve them with a new device or an internet zone calculation.

Use the information for a clear purpose

Decide whether you want a simple live display, a record to discuss with a professional or a way to compare similar sessions. The watch-metrics checklist can help you choose a less cluttered screen.
